BERLINO - Il referendum che chiedeva di non chiudere lo storico aeroporto berlinese di Tempelhof è fallito. Secondo i dati provvisori diffusi, a favore del mantenimento in vita dello scalo si è espresso soltanto il 21,7% degli aventi diritto. Il quorum, fissato al 25% dei 2,4 milioni di berlinesi chiamati al voto, non è stato così raggiunto. Il 60,2% dei cittadini che si sono recati alle urne ha votato per non chiudere Tempelhof: si tratta in tutto di 530.231 berlinesi, al di sotto dei 611.000 voti necessari per sancire il successo della consultazione. Nei mesi scorsi il governo di Berlino, guidato da Klaus Wowereit, aveva deciso di chiudere dal 31 ottobre l’aeroporto, oberato da pesanti deficit annuali.
REFERENDUM - Contro tale decisione si è schierata un’iniziativa civica, che ha raccolto le firme necessarie per indire il referendum e che ha ottenuto anche l’appoggio del partito cristiano-democratico della Cdu, a cominciare dal cancelliere Angela Merkel. La consultazione, tuttavia, non aveva valore vincolante, ma rappresentava una semplice richiesta all’esecutivo locale. Wowereit aveva già fatto sapere di voler chiudere lo scalo, indipendentemente dal risultato delle urne, per non mettere a rischio l’apertura del nuovo mega scalo Bbi, che sorgerà dal 2011 dall’allargamento dell’aeroporto di Schoenefeld, nel sud-est della città. Inaugurato nel 1923 nella parte centro-meridionale di Berlino, Tempelhof è il più vecchio dei tre aeroporti cittadini (oltre a Schoenefeld l’altro è quello di Tegel, nel nord-ovest, che dovrebbe essere ugualmente chiuso dopo l’apertura dello scalo Bbi). L’aeroporto è entrato nella storia della capitale tedesca. Qui atterrarono gli aerei statunitensi e britannici carichi di generi di prima necessità, che consentirono di tenere in vita la parte occidentale di Berlino durante il blocco della città, organizzato dall’Unione sovietica nel 1948-1949.
